I recently decided to have a clear-out of some of my (excessive!) fabric collection and in doing so, found some rather fabulous print fabrics, bought for costume pieces but never used.
This weekend I’m heading to The Guilty Lily in Edinburgh for their Winter Fair, where I’ll have a stall with a selection of my handmade goodies! So I was wondering… what could I make with some of my more interesting remnants to take to the fair, for those who perhaps would not be a fan of my nipple tassels and more burlesque-orientated wares? That’s when I came up with the idea:

Customising a Costume Piece

Realise I’ve rather neglected tumblr the last few weeks, instead I’ve been uber-busy making lots of shiney new accessories, corsets and costume bits!

People often ask about my costume pieces (most of which I make myself) so for this blog, I just wanted to share a simple crafty customisation…

I needed a jade green thong to match my new Oriental costume, but the corset & bra were both made with silk brocade; non-stretchy and thus not ideal for customising a stretch thong. Luckily I was able to pick up one in an almost identical colour, so here’s what I began with:

For stage-wear, I like my costume pieces to be decorated / fringed etc etc; nothing bugs me more than performers in simple, ready-made, off-the-rack cheap undies!

So I set to work, experimenting with various trims, braids, ribbon etc to see what I could make…
I began by cutting the elasticated lace out of the side panels and replacing with ribbon ties. I then placed the elasticated lace on the main body of the thong and hand-stitched on to create some detail. I then trimmed the raw edges of the lace with some glittered braid trim in a slightly contrasting shade of turquoise. Next, I stitched fringing to hang down both hips; this gives more movement for the costume onstage, creating a better visual, as well as being a useful trick for making your ass look smaller, if you’re self-conscious about certain body parts! ;)
Finally, finished off with a simple design of 3 blue plastic crystals in the centre.

The finished piece… this is a very simple customisation, completed using bits & bobs I already had in my fabric drawer. I’ve avoided embellishing the waistband, as the corset will sit over it when it’s worn, so embellishments would just be unecessary / uncomfortable.  I’ll probably dress it up some more over time, perhaps add some crystals for a bit of extra sparkle but in the meantime… here’s a peek at the costume (minus fishtail satin skirt)…

Corset: handmade from my own pattern.
Bra: customised plain black halterneck bikini top, covered in fabric to match corset and embellished with sequin trim. Faux-vintage brooch sewn onto centre for detail.
Add a random scarf I had laying around in the perfect colour… :D

I hope this has been interesting / useful and will maybe inspire some other people to get crafty…

That’s all for now, but stay tuned for my next blog, coming later this weekend, which will be all about my new custom corset line, launching this autumn!
